CENTERING FORCES

Alluding to the etheric construct of the seven chakras in Hindu spiritualism, Centering Forces nods to the energy points within an ancient system originating in the Indian subcontinent, first referenced in the Vedas (1500–1000 BC). Chakras, envisioned as spinning wheels of energy, must remain open and aligned to ensure the harmonious flow of life force, maintaining homeostasis.

Centering Forces comprises pentad investigations representing the harmony of biorhythms, schematic procedural data, sensorial data ( actuators and digital + analog values interpolation ) and static/reactive data and audio visualization (MIDI quantization of symbolic chakras).

SAHASRARA - THE CROWN CHAKRA

Diverging from the other chakras associated with tangible elements such as earth, water, fire, air, and ether, Sahasrara stands as the paramount chakra, transcending physicality and aligning instead with spiritual enlightenment and the awareness of universal interconnectedness. Adorned in purple to symbolize purity and transcendence, this highest chakra is linked to both the central and peripheral nervous systems. Drawing a parallel between the nodes of Touch Designer and the synapses within neural networks, a metaphorical representation of a hyper-interconnected technological society emerges, where the interdependence of data gives rise to dynamic visual landscapes.

Abstract patterns conveyed interconnectedness and cosmic vastness, reflecting Sahasrara’s spiritual themes. Fluid visuals symbolized the universe’s boundless potential and collective consciousness. Touch Designer, a versatile tool, enabled rapid experimentation, from visualizing noise grids to crafting intricate node-based networks, expanding creative possibilities in new media art.

AJNA - THE THIRD EYE CHAKRA

Ajna, the penultimate sacral symbol, represents intuition, metaphysical perception, and enlightenment, associated with deep indigo blue. Linked to the optic and nervous systems, it fosters inner wisdom and a deeper connection to the universe. Expanding on the initial experiment, a larger dataset was used to encode the class’s biorhythmic data through p5.js graphics, illustrating human integration within a societal nexus.

The project captures Ajna's essence by converting internal states into expressive visuals. Data from pulse, breath, and blinking were transformed into hexaflexagon patterns through a twelve-step process, symbolizing collective expression. Transferring these visuals into print artifacts refined spatial awareness and technical skills, deepening the understanding of translating abstract data into tangible artistic forms.

VISHUDDHA - THE THROAT CHAKRA

Vishuddha embodies clarity, communication, and tranquility through its cerulean hues. Associated with the vocal and articulatory systems, this fifth chakra governs expression and creativity. Inspired by scrying rituals, an interactive process was designed to visualize internal consciousness. Covering a light detector triggered hypnotic iterations, symbolizing neuronal activity while activating an LED through Arduino-executed code, merging sensory experience with technological expression.

This experiment seamlessly blends symbolism and technology, with the light sensor and glass bowl representing the Vishuddha chakra. Challenges arose with unfamiliar code instantiation, prompting deeper exploration of programming principles. This allowed adaptation of the code, animation of static visuals inspired by Lissajous figures, and integration of analog light sensor values. Precision fine-tuning was crucial, ensuring the sensor remained within the desired range while synchronizing with the LED’s glow.

ANAHATA - THE HEART CHAKRA

Anahata, the heart of corporeal existence, bridges the physical and spiritual realms. Adorned in green, it symbolizes love, compassion, and emotional well-being, linked to the heart, lungs, and circulation. Reflecting this, biological metadata—breath, pulse, and blink—was recorded and digitally transformed using p5.js, visualizing fluctuations in bodily processes through computational graphics.

MANIPURA - THE SOLAR PLEXUS CHAKRA

Manipura, the Third Chakra, governs personal power, self-esteem, and motivation, radiating a solar yellow brilliance. It supports gastrointestinal health and influences vitality, intellect, and stability. To exemplify balance and harmony within the body, we amalgamated the symbolisms of three other chakras- Manipura, Ajna, and Anahata ( Breath, Blink, and Pulse ) by transcribing them into MIDI sequences to conceive psychedelic audio-visualizations through digital encoding of auditory data in Touch Designer.

This process embodies Manipura’s transformative energy, converting raw power into intentional action. By sketching chakra logos on an online sequencer and generating sound from physiological rhythms, we explored data’s evolution into dynamic expression. Our playful approach to audio visualization completed the cycle by transcribing visuals into sound and then generating new visuals from the audio. Using bitmap software, we mapped MIDI notes like pixels, creating an interactive experience. Experimenting with MIDI inputs in TouchDesigner deepened our technical understanding while enhancing our creative exploration of sound, visuals, and data relationships.

“Centering Forces” is a curation of an assiduously created series of pentad investigations representing the harmony of biorhythms, schematic procedural data, sensorial data + static/reactive data and audio visualization.
